Soft or Hard? And we aren’t talking Eggs, we are talking Orthotics.
It’s a question we get asked weekly at Canberra Podiatry, should I get Soft or Hard Orthotics? Well, the simple answer is, it depends. There are merits to both devices, and it all comes down to what you are being treated for.
Misconception
All hard orthotics are uncomfortable. This is simply not true, at Canberra Podiatry we make custom orthotics on the premises in our laboratory and have been doing so since 1997, we know that depending on your condition there are multiple options for orthotics to help you and we use this knowledge to make comfortable and more importantly practical and functional orthotics, whether they are flexible or rigid.
What is an Orthotic?
An orthotic is “an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system”
An Orthotist is the primary medical clinician responsible for the prescription, manufacture and management of orthoses. Our Orthotic Technician Andrew Pearson loves manufacturing and adjusting orthotic devices and footwear in his Laboratory, as he has seen firsthand over the years, just how these devices can impact the wearer.
Orthotics control, guide, limit and/or immobilize an extremity, joint or body segment for a particular reason
- Restrict movement in a given direction
- Assist movement generally
- Reduce weight bearing forces for a particular purpose
- Aid rehabilitation from fractures after the removal of a cast
- Otherwise correct the shape and/or function of the body, to provide easier movement capability or reduce pain
In Summary
Our number one goal is to create orthotics that are easy to use and that are comfortable, they shouldn’t be noticed when being used, having our own Orthotics Lab means we can make any major or minor adjustments as needed. The right footwear is also a huge part in making sure any Orthotic, no matter its firmness, works. We have an extensive range of shoes in stock at Canberra Podiatry in Chifley and we know the best fit depending on your treatment requirements.
