Patrick Doan

Senior Podiatrist | Athletic Performance Consultant

Born and raised in Canberra, Patrick joined the team in January 2016. Patrick’s focus is a special interest in sports podiatry, sports performance and biomechanics, bringing with him a wealth of experience as an athlete in a variety of sports at a competitive level such as tennis, golf, soccer and AFL. He is also a keen road cyclist. Patrick graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Podiatry in 2014. During his time at university he was an active member of the student community and served a term as the President of the CSU Podiatry Club.

Patrick has a comprehensive background in sports medicine and high performance sport, he is an ASCA Professional Coaching Accreditation Scheme Professional (PCAS-P) and a Level 2 Strength & Conditioning coach, graduating from the Australian Institute of Sport. Patrick has been awarded a Master of High Performance Sport from the Australian Catholic University in 2018 which has assisted in developing his special focus in sports biomechanics and sports medicine. Patrick is also an ESSA Accredited Sports Scientist (Level 2) and Accredited Exercise Scientist. These accreditations allow Patrick the national industry standards to work with everyone from the recreational to the elite athletes in high performance sport as outlined by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) now known as Sport Australia. He is also undergoing the accreditation process with the Australian Podiatry Association Career Framework for credentialing as a Sports Podiatrist.

In 2012 Patrick was the Head Sports Trainer and Rehabilitative Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Wodonga Bulldogs Football Club for season 2012-13. He has been a Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Belconnen Magpies Football Club in the NEAFL & Canberra AFL Division 1 between 2013-2016. From 2016 to 2018 Patrick was the of Head of Athletic Rehabilitation and Development for the Canberra Raiders Junior Representative Squads (Development squads & Under-16 and 18s) and managed/programmed all aspects of rehabilitation and GPS monitoring.

Patrick also has a professional consulting role with GPSports (now Catapult Sports), engaging with different generations of player tracking GPS units, tri-axial accelerometers and heart rate monitors which have supplied teams in the AFL, ARU, NRL, NFL and English Premier League and he has applied the technology practically for running, rehabilitation and athlete monitoring.

In 2017 Patrick engaged in a High Performance Tour of USA NCAA Division 1 college programs. He collaborated with sports medicine staff, orthopaedic surgeons, sports scientists, strength & power coaches at Stanford University, Berkeley University and Oklahoma State University. Through this experience he further developed his skills and applications in athletic rehabilitation, strength & conditioning, sports science, sports nutrition, biomechanics and progressing athletes towards their performance goals. This provides a great foundation for Patrick’s focus in sport related injuries (Achilles tendon, hamstring injuries, knee pathology and foot and ankle injuries), rehabilitation, gait & running assessments and athletic footwear prescription.

Patrick is a professional member of the Australian Podiatry Association; Australasian Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM), Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), Australian Strength & Conditioning Association (ASCA) and Sports Medicine Australia (SMA).
